How Copley connects to Fairlawn
Copley Township and Fairlawn share a boundary in the Census map files, and Copley also borders Akron, Bath Township and Norton (TIGER/Line 2024). I-77, SR-18 and SR-21 run through both Copley and Fairlawn, and SR-162 crosses Copley as well (TIGER/Line 2024 roads).
Copley is a township, not a city and not part of Akron. Two thirds of its land is in the 44321 ZIP. The rest is split among codes such as 44320, 44203, 44281 and even 44333, the Fairlawn office's own ZIP (Census ZCTA file), so a Copley house can carry the mailing name of a neighbor.
Younger houses, different questions
The median Copley home was built in 1992, the newest median among the communities we list, and only 3.0% of homes date from 1939 or earlier. Owners live in 74.1% of occupied homes (Census Reporter, 2020-2024 survey data).
A newer house tends to shift the typical complaint from worn hardware toward the opener: a keypad that stops working, a remote that has to be reprogrammed, a door that reverses for no clear reason, or a wall button that lights up but does nothing. Those are electronics and sensor problems more often than broken metal. Our opener repair page walks through them.
Age still is not destiny. A door installed with the house in the early 1990s has had a long run, and springs wear out on use, not on the calendar.

The opener in January
NOAA's normals for the Akron-Canton Airport give a January average low of 20.3°F, and the high stays at or below freezing on about 40 days a year (NCEI monthly normals, annual normals). Grease on the tracks and in the opener gets thicker as it cools, so the motor meets more resistance. Some openers read that extra load as an obstruction, then stop or reverse.
Safe things to try: check that the photo-eye lenses are clean and free of frost, make sure the lock or vacation button on the wall console is off, and confirm the opener has power. If a power outage is the issue, our guide to battery backup and outages covers what to expect. Do not raise the force setting to push through the cold. That setting protects people and pets under the door.
Township resource
Copley runs its own residential permitting page, and it names both attached and unattached private garages. Use it if you plan to enlarge a garage, change an opening, or add power to a detached building. Door repair on the existing opening is a different matter.
Calling from Copley
Call (330) 947-4591 at any hour. Tell us you are in Copley Township, give the street, and read us the model number from the opener motor if the problem seems electrical. Nothing gets set up until we have checked that the address is inside our coverage.
Handy to have when you call:
- What the door did, in order: moved, stopped, reversed, made a noise
- Whether the opener light blinks, and how many times
- A photo of the wall console and one of the door from inside, taken from the ground
