A different county, and a different metro area
Medina sits outside Summit County. The Census Bureau places the city in Medina County and counts it in the Cleveland metro area, while Fairlawn is in Summit County and the Akron metro area (Census Reporter, Medina; Census Reporter, Fairlawn). It does not border Fairlawn or any community that does. Plainly put, it is farther out than the towns that border Fairlawn.
One state route runs through both cities. SR-18 is listed inside Fairlawn, where it is West Market Street, and inside Medina, along with US-42, SR-3 and SR-57 (Census TIGER/Line 2024 road file). All of Medina's land falls in the 44256 ZIP (Census ZCTA-to-place file).
Homes, owners and renters
ACS estimates for 2020 to 2024 put Medina's median year built at 1983. Owners occupy 67.3% of occupied homes, so roughly a third are rented, and 7.5% of homes predate 1940 (Census Reporter, ACS 2024 5-year).
That rental share matters for a garage door call. If you rent, the door usually belongs to the owner, and so does the decision about repairing or replacing it. Let your landlord or property manager know before you book, and have their name and number handy when you call us. If the door is stuck with your car inside, say so; that part is urgent whoever owns the door.

Opener trouble, one step at a time
On any house, a door problem can turn out to be the opener rather than the door. The remote works from the driveway but not the street. The keypad died. The door starts down, then goes back up. Before calling, try the safe checks: look for a lit lock button on the wall control, wipe both photo-eye lenses, and make sure nothing sits in the door's path. Our opener repair page goes further.
Never turn the force adjustment up to get past a stubborn reversal. That setting is what makes the door back off when it meets a child, a pet or a bumper. Our garage door safety checklist shows the monthly reversal test.
Cold mornings add their own twist. Grease in the opener and on the track thickens as it chills, and some openers read that drag as something in the way. If the door reverses only on the coldest days and behaves by afternoon, mention that pattern when you call. It is a useful clue, not a diagnosis: a technician still checks for obstructions, binding rollers or track, spring balance and the opener itself before changing anything.
Medina's building department
The City of Medina runs its own building department. Its permits page lists a doors and windows permit with zoning certificate, an accessory structure permit, building and electrical permits, and more (City of Medina, Applications and Permits). We cannot tell you whether a garage door replacement on your house falls under one of those. Ask the city before a new door, a wider opening or a new circuit goes in.
Calling from Medina
Call (330) 947-4591 any hour. Say Medina and give the full street address, since coverage this far from Fairlawn has to be checked for each call before anything is set up. If you rent, have the owner's contact ready. A photo of the opener's label and one of the wall control help us see what you have.
