From Fairlawn to Norton
The Census boundary files show Norton bordering Akron, Barberton and Copley Township, but not Fairlawn (TIGER/Line 2024). Copley Township borders both of them. SR-21 is listed inside Fairlawn, Copley and Norton alike, and I-76, US-224, SR-261 and SR-585 also cross Norton (TIGER/Line 2024 roads).
Norton is a city that reaches slightly into Wayne County, though nearly all of it is in Summit (Norton city charter).
The ZIP that points to Barberton
About 95% of Norton's land uses 44203, which is also Barberton's ZIP (Census ZCTA-to-place file). So a Norton home can have a mailing address that reads Barberton. When you call us, say Norton, and give the street. It keeps both the service check and any permit question pointed at the right city.

Houses and the doors on them
Census estimates put Norton's median year built at 1962, with 87.4% of occupied homes owner-occupied and 13.7% built in 1939 or earlier (Census Reporter's 2020-2024 figures). Those numbers are about homes. We cannot tell from them whether a garage is attached, detached, original or rebuilt.
What the age can hint at is the paperwork trail. An older door often has no readable label left, so it helps to measure the door's width and height and count its sections before you call. Those three facts go a long way toward identifying replacement parts.
A hundred-plus freezing nights
NOAA's normals for the Akron-Canton Airport put the yearly count of nights at 32°F or colder near 120, spread over eight months from October to May (NCEI annual normals, monthly normals). Each one is a chance for the bottom seal to freeze to the driveway, for the opener to meet stiff, cold grease, or for frost to cloud a photo-eye lens.
Springs are steel under constant high stress, and many people notice a break on a cold morning, often as a single loud bang. The door then feels far too heavy to lift, or the opener hums and the door barely moves. Stop there. Unplug the opener, keep the car where it is, and see broken spring repair or emergency repair. Do not try to wind, clamp or remove a spring; the stored force can cause serious injury.
Permits moved in 2026
If the job grows into carpentry or wiring, check the current authority first. Norton's Zoning Office says that as of May 26, 2026, Summit County takes new building permit applications for Norton, while jobs already submitted to Barberton finish there (city announcement). Rules like this change, so confirm before starting.
Calling from Norton
Ring (330) 947-4591 any time of day or night. Say Norton even if your mail says Barberton, give the street, and describe the sound or movement you noticed. We check the address against our coverage first, then talk through the next step.
What helps most on that call:
- Where the door is sitting right now: closed, open, or stuck partway
- Whether a car is trapped inside and when you need it
- A ground-level photo of the springs above the door, without climbing
