Where Wadsworth fits
Wadsworth is in Medina County, not Summit, and the Census Bureau counts it in the Cleveland metro area rather than Akron's (Census Reporter, Wadsworth). It does not border Fairlawn. In the Census map files it shares a short stretch of boundary with Norton, which itself lies past Copley Township from our office (Census TIGER/Line 2024 places). So Wadsworth is two communities out, across the county line.
Several numbered roads cross both Norton and Wadsworth: I-76, US-224 and SR-261. SR-57 and SR-94 run through Wadsworth too (TIGER/Line 2024 road file).
The ZIP is 44281 across the whole city (Census ZCTA-to-place). A thin slice of Copley Township also carries 44281 (ZCTA-to-county-subdivision), which is one more reason we ask for the street and the city, not only the ZIP.
A mix of house ages
Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 give Wadsworth a median year built of 1978. About one home in eight, 12.9%, dates from before 1940, and owners occupy 67.9% of occupied homes (Census Reporter, ACS 2024 5-year). That is a wide spread: some very old houses alongside much newer ones.
On an older property, the garage may have been added or rebuilt at some point, and the door hardware may come from several eras. On a newer one, the door may be original, but that is worth confirming rather than assuming; ask whether the springs have ever been replaced. Either way, springs wear with use.
If you know roughly when the door or springs were last replaced, jot it down. Knowing that, plus the door's width and how many sections it has, lets us narrow down the parts before anyone looks at it in person.

When a spring lets go
A torsion spring break is loud. People describe a crack or a bang from the garage, often with nobody touching the door. Afterward, the opener may run and the door rises a few inches then stops, or the door simply feels far too heavy.
What to do right then: stop using the opener, unplug it if you can reach the cord safely, and leave the door where it is. Do not try to lift it with a bar or hold it up with a ladder. Do not touch the spring, the winding cones or the cables; they can release enough force to injure. Our emergency repair page covers what happens next, and if a storm has knocked out power, the guide to openers during outages explains the release handle.
Permits changed on January 1, 2025
The city's permit page says that as of January 1, 2025, the Medina County Building Department took over all residential building code duties from the city, while zoning permits are still issued by Wadsworth. Detached garages appear on its list of projects that need a zoning permit (City of Wadsworth, Permits: How To Get). For anything beyond repairing the existing door, check with both offices before work starts.
Calling from Wadsworth
Call (330) 947-4591 at whatever hour it happens. Mention Wadsworth, give the street address, and say whether the door is closed, open or stuck partway. Because Wadsworth is outside Summit County, we confirm your address is in our service area before anything is scheduled.
